A Tale of Two Brands: John McCain vs. Barack Obama
The more you look around, the more you realize that image is everything. For goodness sakes, that’s how Stronghold Studios stays in business. The same holds true for politics. What was once something as trivial as a blue name on a red backdrop or a white name on a blue backdrop has turned into branding at it’s best. When we see this happen, us branding geeks at Stronghold Studios get increasingly interested! Senator Barack Obama has set the pace when it comes to hiring a great PR team. Immediately Senator Obama’s seemingly nationally recognizable logo, the panted “O” has taken the political world by storm. He has become the Presidential Nominee 2.0. Experience and record has apparently taken 2nd stage to image and brand recognition.
As graphic designers and brand specialists, at that, we give our props to Senator Obama’s campaign for their great work in coming up with a great logo and marketing it correctly. You can now find Barack Obama’s signature “O” on America’s number one Mobile Device, Apple Incorporated’s iPhone. That’s right! Barack Obama’s teams has developed an Apple iPhone application that you can download directly onto the home screen. From this application you can get news updates, inform friends and even donate to the “cause.”
Where does Senator John McCain stand on all of this? I believe he made the right move, or his PR teams, in any event. John McCain’s team made the branding move shortly thereafter with Senator McCain’s now signature “Star” logo, giving reference to his self proclaimed “Maverick” stance in Washington. What I love most about Senator McCain’s move was it wasn’t over the top. It was simple, they didn’t try to compete with Senator Obama’s logo, in fact, they went the other direction entirely. It was almost retaliative the way they moved, very strategic. McCain proved that he didn’t have to incorporate red, white and blue in his logo because his record proved his patriotism. Very interesting.
So what’s our political stance on the two? Well, luckily for us 3 clowns here at Stronghold Studios, we’re just design geeks! We will stick to what we know! We just keep designing and branding and allowing our work ethic to show our stance on life.
